What is an Imperative Sentence?

Def: An imperative sentence is a type of sentence that gives a command, makes a request and gives advice, According to the Collins Dictionary, “An imperative Sentence is one that is used to denote “a mood of verbs used in giving orders, making requests, etc.” According to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “An imperative sentence as one that has the “power to restrain, control, and direct.” Examples:
  • Please, give me your pen.
  • Open the window.
  • Take your medicines properly.
  • Let me go.
  • Let’s play.
  • Kindly issue me my transfer certificate.

Kinds of an Imperative Sentence:

There are two types of Imperative sentence.
  1. Positive Imperative Sentence.
  2. Negative Imperative Sentence.

1. Positive Imperative Sentence.

Def:A positive imperative sentence is one that gives a direct command or makes a request in a positive or affirmative manner. Examples of Positive Imperative Sentence.
  • Please listen to me.
  • Let me go

  • Practice this daily.

2. Negative Imperative Sentence.

Def:A negative imperative sentence is one that gives a command or makes a request by instructing someone not to do something. Examples of  Negative Imperative Sentence.
  • Don’t cut the trees.

  • Don’t blow the horn unnecessarily.
